So far, my home server has been running on a decommissioned Lenovo W520 with plenty of oomph. The only downside was that it occupied half the available desk space when connected to its docking station (and reducing the power consumption seemed like a good idea as well).
After investing in one of Intel’s bottom of the range NUCs, it took all of three minutes to get the new machine up and running:
- remove HDD from laptop and insert into NUC
- remove RAM from laptop and insert into NUC
- boot NUC and update IP
It always amazes me to see how Linux boots without problems when moved to completely new hardware.
